Kathrin Zettel landed her fifth podium of the
season, with second place in the slalom.
“This result is more than I could hope for,” said the Vail veteran, whose first
World Cup race was in 1995. “I’m so close to the podium. It’s great going
into an Olympic year. I’ve worked really hard these last two years getting
back here.”
Schleper will be 31 in February and took a season off during her pregnancy
before returning to racing last winter, during which she said she spent too
much time analyzing her races to do very well. But she is clearly, after finishing eighth in the Are GS, getting back to top form — all while keeping her
husband and toddler in tow on tour.
“I hope I’m inspiring moms and showing them that anything’s possible,”
she said. “It’s funny, now that I’m a mom, I’m not so much inspiring little
kids to follow their dreams. I’m maybe inspiring moms to be healthy and
active.”
Vonn, who was leading the field for most of her second run, was one of
several racers to lose momentum at the bottom of the course, although she
had a better excuse than most. She ended up 18th.
