Take her out to the ball
Olympic gold medalist moguls skier Hannah Kearney knows her
way around the bumps. And she got to take on a mound of the
dirt variety April 6 when she was invited to throw out the opening pitch at a Boston Red Sox Game.
Kearney’s lifelong love of the Red Sox gained the attention of
the club during the Vancouver Games when news spread that
the Vermont native had worn a Jacoby Ellsbury jersey under her
uniform at the Olympic Opening Ceremony. “The Red Sox jer-
sey wasn’t a part of the issued Opening Ceremony uniforms, so
I had to wear it underneath everything else, but I had it on me,”
Kearney said. “The fact that anyone on the Red Sox knows that
I won a gold medal is incredibly flattering.”
Though Kearney has had plenty of experience with pressure on
the slopes, she had to battle nerves as she trotted on to the field
at the legendary Fenway Park.
“I was very nervous,” Kearney admitted. “I trained for moguls skiing and I trained for the Olympic moment. I have been
practicing, but I’ve not been practicing for 22 years for this moment.”
After Ellsbury caught the pitch, he presented Kearney with a
baseball and bat, and she then spent the rest of the night enjoying the game. Sadly, the Sox lost 6-4 to the New York Yankees.
