Andy Newell
Age: 27
Hometown: Shaftsbury, Vt.
Years on Team: 6
Club: Stratton Mountain School
Equipment: Fischer, Salomon, Rudy Project, Swix
Sponsor: Spectra Energy
Résumé: Technically, Newell has the best results on the
team with three career World Cup podiums, closing a two-
decade-long U.S. drought. He’s
most comfortable as a sprinter and
finished out last season fourth in the
World Cup sprint standings.
Outlook: “The Olympics weren’t
my best races of the year, but the
experience has motivated me more
than ever to push toward the 2014
Games,” says Newell. “My number
one goal for [2011] is to medal at World Championships
and also grab as many World Cup podiums as I can along
the way.”
Kikkan Randall
Age: 27
Hometown: Anchorage, Alaska
Years on Team: 10
Club: Alaska Pacific University Nordic Center
Equipment: Fischer, Salomon, Rudy Project, Swix
Sponsors: Subway of Alaska, Providence Health Sys-
tems of Alaska, Anchorage Wom-
en’s Clinic
Résumé: As good as it gets — Randall is the only member of the U.S.
cross country team with a World Cup
win to her credit. She was a rocket
last season with five national championships, a World Cup second at
Oslo and the best ever Olympic re-
sult (eighth in the sprint) for an American woman.
Outlook: “Looking ahead to 2011, I’ve got my sights set
on the World Championship sprint in Oslo,” says Randall.
“I believe it’s a good course for me and I would like to improve on my silver medal from Liberec in 2009. I am also
excited to participate in the Tour de Ski for the first time
and continue to improve my distance racing.”
Liz Stephen
Age: 23
Hometown: East Montpelier, Vt.
Club: Burke Mountain Academy
Equipment: Rossignol, Rudy Project, OneWay
Résumé: Stephen has been racing nordic only since 2002,
when she crossed over from alpine as an alternative to an
interest in running, but has already
made in onto a World Champion-
ship team and an Olympic squad.
Outlook: “I competed in my first
Olympic Games [2010] and the ex-
perience was incredibly valuable and
really fun,” says Stephen. “I hope it
will not be my last Games, and with
my future goals in mind, I plan on
focusing my energy on making the World Championship
team in 2011 and improving on my last World Champion-
ship results from 2009.”
