2011 J3 CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three’s Company
GARRETT DRILLER AND SERINA KIDD ARE AMONG THE
STANDOUTS AT THE 2011 J3 CHAMPIONSHIPS By Hank McKee
The J3 title meets are always eye-opening, as ski-
ers 14 and 15 are brought together, in many cases for
the first time, within three regional meets: this year,
East at Okemo, Vt., Rocky/Central in Aspen, Colo.;
and West at Squaw Valley, Calif. While there were
weather concerns at all three sites, it was evident the
sites had been chosen well, as race crews provided
the best possible racing in trying conditions.
In the 2011 season, when the events were called
Championships instead of Junior Olympics as they had
traditionally been known, there were the usual stand-
outs. Three skiers — two in the East and one in the
West —won two events. Burke Mountain Academy’s
Danielle Brownell-Patty won the slalom and super G
in the East while male counterpart Sam Morse of Car-
rabassett Valley Academy won his GS and super G. In
the West, Sugar Bowl Academy’s James Lebel got the
wins in GS and super G.
These were hardly the only standouts, however. Two
other skiers collected three podiums each.
