Higgins was second fastest on the day, while Jennifer Kaufman let loose with
two crisp runs to take third among the women.
The usual suspects dominated the Group D men with Roy taking the win
over Neubauer and Gooch.
March 26, A/B Giant Slalom
Neither Bs nor As had difficulty with the GS due to good sets, blazing sun-
shine and great skiing. Tim Hill once again crushed his B Group and even
came within the same second on both runs as Class 1 champ Matt Sav-
age, despite an age difference of nearly 20 years. Hendrickson and Michael
Walsh (RM, Class 4) rounded out the top four.
Nursing weary legs and sore backs after four events over five days, racers
could finally let loose at the final awards banquet. Awards for the day were
presented, as were trophies for the combined, which included the SG, GS,
and slalom. Special mention was made of those who won all the races within
their respective classes: Anna Droege (IM, Class 10), Rosemary Moschel (IM,
Class 8), Lisa Densmore, Jessie McAleer, and Dana Alexandrescu among
the women. For the men, receiving recognition were John Droege (IM, Class
13), Alphonse Sevigny (EA, Class 12), Pepi Neubauer (EA, Class 9), Tim Hill
(PN, Class 5), and Matt Savage (FW, Class 1).
The Skier’s Edge National Team was also announced, along with the winner
of the coveted Divisions Cup. Thanks to a a scoring system that even MIT
grads might have trouble grasping, the Eastern Divisional athletes might not
have understood why they won, but they proudly accepted the trophy, which
they will harbor until next year’s National Championship event at Park City.
As for McAleer, it was time to relax, drink something other than water, in-
dulge in some more socializing, and reflect on a satisfying season. “I don’t
know why this season has been different,” said McAleer, who will return to
her job as a recruiter for a software computer company. “I work hard at it, but
I think it’s mostly because I’m at a point in my life where I’m happy, relaxed,
and living life on my own terms.”
