THE 19TH ANNUAL WHISTLER CUP ONCE AGAIN PROVIDES A GLIMPSE AT THE STARS OF TOMORROW By Hank McKee
2011 WHISTLER CUP
From the opening parade — with the 25 nations
marching through the streets of Whistler — through
dinners and nightly ceremonies, the Whistler Cup is a
big deal. One of two major international ski race series
for those 11 to 14 years old, the Cup brings together
the best young racing talent. It’s been the first major
stage for many who have continued on to greatness
at the World Cup, World Championship and Olympic
levels.
A year ago at the Whistler Cup, the U.S. got two
podiums, both from Mikaela Shiffrin. This season, six
different U.S. racers contributed a podium to the cause
with Ryan Mooney donating two. Both Mooney and
Danielle Brownell-Patty connected for gold medals, he
in the closing GS and she in the opening super G.
Ryan Mooney climbed the podium
twice at the Whistler Cup.
