MEN Erik Guay CANADIAN ALPINE SKIER OF THE YEAR
No question — the world downhill title brought Erik
Guay this award for the fourth time in his career. It was
his only win of the season, though he finished second in
one of the two downhills at Kvitfjell and was third in super G at Val Gardena. Those were the only podiums for
Canada all season, and Guay contributed all of them. It
was the manner of the World Championship race, however, that cemented his status to the voting committee.
Leaving nothing to chance, Guay had hiked the course
at Garmisch when he learned the venue would hold
World Champs and, he said, had identified where the
race could be won or lost. He agreed that his start position on a warm day was to his advantage, but he took
that advantage to the victory bank.
