Athletes of the Year
WOMEN Marit Bjoergen
INTERNATIONAL NORDIC SKIER OF THE YEAR
Bjoergen was unbeatable for almost the entire season. She held an unheard of one-year long winning streak in distance races, from the Lahti World
Cup in 2010 to the final race in Oslo at the World Championships, where
she was finally dethroned in the 30K by her younger teammate, Therese
Johaug. In addition to her dominance on the World Cup, Bjoergen took four
gold medals and a silver in Oslo, a better haul than any other athlete at the
Championships. This season she also surpassed the records held by compatriots Bente Skari and Bjorn Daehlie for most career World Cup victories.
And she’s not done yet; according to Norwegian newspapers, she’ll continue racing through 2014.
