Guides for Juniors: Whether using a file,
diamond, or stone, it’s critical that the tool is held securely and firmly so
that you can lap the metal with it. This style is far safer when trying to
make sharp edges, and far more consistent. My recommendations for
junior guides are the Swix ($49) and Holmenkol ($130)
Guides for Elite/Pros/
Masters: You can’t wrong with the Swix
and Holmenkol guides shown at left, but if you’re looking for a more “traditional” looking guide, my favorite is
Wintersteiger’s Ski Man Guide ($32 in aluminum) for
its light weight, large debris notch, excellent quality and
low price.
Irons for Juniors: It’s no
secret that a quality wax iron is a necessity, and
you get what you pay for. This digital wax iron
from Wintersteiger ($78) is a terrific unit, works
well and won’t break the bank.
