GLOBAL RESCUE
“For a parent, Global Rescue was
amazing,” recalls AnneMarie. “They took
control of the situation and helped us
decipher what was going on medically, but
were also reassuring us they would help in
any way with Vincent.”
After the Todds learned there might be
more surgery ahead for Vincent once he
returned home, Global Rescue deployed
paramedic Glenn Doherty, a skier and a
former Navy SEAL, to handle bedside care
and accompany Vincent home once he
was fit to fly.
“He was very well trained, knew exactly
what to ask the doctors,” says AnneMarie of
Doherty. “He also knew what to tell parents
to put them at ease dealing with an 18-
year-old who had head trauma. Glenn and
Global’s ability to translate into laymen’s
terms Vince’s problems was critical in
helping our family understand when and
how to transport.”
On the flight home, Vincent and Doherty
sat in the first-class cabin, with Doherty
working on a contingency plan with the pilot
should Vincent suffer any problems. There
were none, and once the Todds were back
in New Jersey, Global contacted Johns
Hopkins specialists for recommendations
for plastic surgeons in the area. Global
continued to follow up for the next two
months to ensure Vincent would have a full
recovery.
“What impressed me the most was the
availability and their concerns for their
members,” says AnneMarie. “We were
very distraught, and to hear their calming,
assuring voices over the phone every day,
giving us updates on our son’s status, was
very relieving. Anybody who does this sport
needs this service.”
As for Vincent? He dismissed his doctor’s
advice to take time off before college thanks
to his time with Global Rescue’s Doherty.
“Glenn’s glass-half-full rhetoric was always
present in my mind,” recalls Vincent. “Having
a positive outlook when facing a long-term
recovery from injury is invaluable. Global
Rescue genuinely inspired confidence in my
own ability to bounce back from surgery and
return to my pre-injury athletic and cognitive
best. Without Global Rescue, my approach
to rehab may have been unnecessarily
hesitant and prolonged, when in reality I
needed a return to normalcy as quickly as
possible.”
Vincent went on to start his freshman year
of college that fall and continued to ski race
NCAA at Colby College.
