“I missed opportunities last year, and I wanted to
come out of the gate this year charging and never let up,”
said Lindsey Vonn after officially clinching her fourth over-
all World Cup title — with five races to spare.
As the 2012 World Cup Finals approached, the stinging
memories of seeing the overall title slip away by just three
points at the end of last season were still fresh in Vonn’s
mind.
That was not going to happen again.
“I was a little more motivated this year for a number of rea-
sons,” said Vonn, 27. “I was disappointed with the way the
season ended last year with the races being canceled and
losing the overall by three points. Last year taught me a lot
of things and the most important is to never get comfort-
able and never think that you have won a race before you
have. That mentality had really stayed with me the whole
year. When I’m in the starting gate, I know I have to risk
everything and if I win, great. If not, then that’s just the way
it is, but I know that I have given it everything that I have
— it’s a different way of thinking. I don’t have to think about
anything but my skiing and I really enjoy that.”
Vonn certainly did some charging, and she didn’t even wait
