Norway Continues Dominance of World

Norway had plenty of flag-waving in Italy this month.
The World Junior Championships culminated in Rocca-
raso, Italy, with a slalom, a cancellation and a pair of combined
races calculated differently.
Count it any way you want: Norway came out the top nation
with a total of eight medals — half of them gold — and 17
top- 10 placings. The Swiss had a strong showing with seven
medals, including one gold and 10 top- 10 placings.
The U.S. had two gold medals, both from Ryan Cochran-
Siegle, and eight top- 10 results.
Organizers pulled off the men’s slalom in questionable surface
conditions, but the women’s downhill was canceled
out of the program after a day’s delay by fog. The
traditional method of determining combined winners
at the junior championship is by adding race points
from the downhill, slalom and combined. Without a
downhill to use, authorities decided to incorporate
the super G in the women’s scoring to replace the
canceled downhill. The men stuck to the original
plan.
