Utah’s Miles Havlick didn’t have the easiest winter.
Nearly always the bridesmaid, Havlick had just one victory
in the regular season at the Alaska Invite freestyle race.
Montana State’s David Norris had gotten the better of
Havlick at Steamboat and again in Alaska, and Colorado’s
Rune Oedegaard took the clean sweep at RMISA
Championships. Runner-up in the freestyle race at NCAAs,
Havlick sought greater satisfaction. Though his classic had
dragged slightly behind his skate all year, he ran the jets
full-blast at Bohart Ranch and chased down Norris after
a less-than-serendipitous crash and subsequent broken
pole. On the final stretch of the classic showdown, he
outsprinted Norris for the finish line and rightfully earned
his national title with the spirit of a comeback kid.
