COLLEGIATE NORDIC SKIER OF THE YEAR
Senior Sophie Caldwell has probably replayed the NCAAs classic finish-line
sprint against Vermont’s Amy Glen over and over again in her mind since early
March. After 15 kilometers of impressive pacesetting under the heat of a warm
Montana sun, a photo finish declared Glen the victor of the race over Caldwell
by a mere two inches. Caldwell finished third in the freestyle race and was the
only female nordic skier to claim two podium results at NCAAs. Perhaps even
more noteworthy were her three victories and three second-place results during
a winter when Dartmouth’s home training facility in Hanover, N.H., almost never
saw snow. The ski world hasn’t seen the last of Caldwell, who plans to continue
to compete with her eyes set on a national team bid.
