Ice, Ice Lady
As part of her ongoing rehabilitation, injured British
ski racer Chemmy Alcott is taking on the flat ice in the
UK’s “Dancing on Ice,” a celebrity figure skating reality
TV show. Alcott, a three-time Olympian, was paired
with professional figure skater Sean Rice for the
competition that hit the air Jan. 8. “Petrified, excited,
giddy and hugely nervous,” Alcott tweeted before the
competition began. “Massive journey to embark on!”
American former child star Corey Feldman also signed
up to compete alongside Alcott. It should be tough
competition as Goonies never say die!

The Late Shows with
Lindsey Vonn
In late December, Lindsey Vonn flew all the way
from central Europe to New York and back just
to appear on “Late Show with David Letterman”
(he’s kind of a big deal). A few weeks later, in Bad
Kleinkirchheim, Austria, Vonn appeared on “Sport
am Sonntag,” a Sunday night sports talk show on
ORF, Austria’s national broadcaster.
The show’s host, Ernst Hausleitner, isn’t Letterman, but he’s kind of a big deal too (in Austria).
“You’ve become something of a big deal in the
United States,” Hausleitner asked Vonn (more or
less — the Waxroom’s German isn’t anywhere
close to as polished as Vonn’s). “Well,” Vonn ex-
plained to Hausleitner, “you have to understand that
most Americans hardly ever see snow, let alone ski
races.”
It’s sometimes hard for Austrians to understand that
ski racing isn’t central to American culture, even if
American skiers are now central to the World Cup
But Hausleitner’s viewers might have understood
that a little better when he showed them a clip from
the Letterman appearance in which Vonn had to ex-
plain the differences between skiing’s various disci-
plines.
