ELISABETH GOERGL AND FABIENNE
SUTER TOP THE SPEED PODIUMS AT BAD
KLEINKIRCHHEIM; JULIA MANCUSO SECOND
IN DOWNHILL BY ERIC WILLIAMS
The last time the women’s World Cup tour stopped in this corner of Austria,
it was 2006 when Janica Kostelic won one of two downhills and the super
G in one weekend. And if you were looking at the results from November
and December, all signs pointed to Lindsey Vonn repeating the feat at Bad
Kleinkircheim on Jan. 7 and 8.
But it had been a month of nothing but tech races, and a lot had changed
since Lake Louise and Beaver Creek. There was a further departure from the
usual drill when the second training run was canceled due to high winds that
damaged safety equipment along the course, giving the race an anybody’s-game feeling Saturday morning.
