Sarah Burke in Park
City skiing accident
Freeskiing legend Sarah Burke of
Midland, Ontario, sustained a serious head
injury Jan. 10 while training in a halfpipe
in Park City, Utah. The four-time X Games
gold medalist and ski film star, 29, was
flown by helicopter to the University Hospital
in Salt Lake City after being stabilized at
the scene of the accident and taken to the
bottom of the mountain by ski patrol. For

First-Ever Winter Youth
Olympic Games Open in
Innsbruck, Austria
After an 18-day Torch Relay through Austria,
the inaugural Winter Youth Olympic Games
officially kicked off with an Opening Ceremony
on Jan. 13. A contingent of 57 athletes aged
14 to 18 — including alpine skiers Alex Leever
and Julia Mueller-Ristine, and cross-country
skiers Patrick Caldwell and Heather Mooney
— was chosen to represent the U.S. in the
same seven sports that will be part of the
