Sochi is making a major investment in the 2014 Games to
create an international winter sports presence. With the test
events this month, brand-new hotels like the Park Inn and Tu-
lip Inn are now open to guests. All in all, there are a reported
dozen three-star and above hotels in the works, including a
398-room Marriott Krasnaya Polyana Hotel in Gorky Gorod
in the heart of the Olympic media village of Gornaya Karusel
— a resort near Rosa Khutor.
A few kilometers away, the village of Krasnaya Polyana
stands much as it has for 150 years: a collection of old hous-
es and chalets now seeing a transformation within the last
two decades. It’s a stark contrast to the brilliant “Disney-like”
colors of the resort hotels springing up in the valley and in the
mountain villages.
Part 3: Adventures in Dining
Dining in Russia is an adventure — a real life version of cha-
rades. Getting a table, easy. Open the menu and try talking to
the waitress — oops, this will be interesting! Hard to navigate
a menu in Cyrillic!
Amidst the old village of Krasnaya Polyana, restaurants are
springing up in neighborhoods. It’s challenging to get to some
Blue and white apartment
buildings house workers.
