MEN’S WORLD CUP: A LOOK AHEAD
for next season, there will be no holding back
from the organizers. They will tenaciously guard
the stellar reputation earned during the last 15
years of hosting early season speed races.
The incredibly high course (it starts at 11,427
feet and finishes at 8,944 ft.) can sap an athlete’s strength, and racers will need all they can
muster as there are multiple jumps, steeps and
tricky sidehills to test competitors of any ability.
Perfect conditions on a formidable hill tends
to let the cream rise to top. The list of downhill
winners at Beaver Creek reads like a list of the
greatest champions of the time: Stephan Ebe-harter, Kristian Ghedina, Franz Heinzer, Carlo
Janka, Hermann Maier three times, Bode Miller three times, Daron Rahlves twice, Andreas
Schifferer, Aksel Lund Svindal and Michael Wal-chhofer.
Didier Cuche, Maier, Hannes Reichelt, and
Svindal have added super G wins. Maier, Lasse
Kjus, Miller, Massimiliano Blardone, Daniel Albrecht, Benjamin Raich, Janka, Marcel Hirscher and
Ted Ligety (three times) have won the Beaver Creek GS.
